Introduction:
This is a narration of the detail of
the events and proceedings of "The online-based Secondary Level English
TPD 2" which is designed for secondary level English teachers under the
guidance of ETC, Kavre. The course mainly focuses on enhancing the professional
development of secondary level teachers with the introduction of 21st-century
pedagogical skill as well as the proper utilization of ICT skills.
About participants: The participants
of the training program are the secondary level English teachers from various
schools from Bagmati state. In this second phase of TPD training, the teachers
from remote areas of different districts to the core city areas have come
together at the same forum through digital connectivity.
Time Schedule: The 10-Day training
was scheduled to begin from half-past ten to 3:20 pm. The training was divided
into three sessions. There was a ten-minute break at 12:17 and another
10-minute refreshing break at 2:05.
Training Goal: The main objective
behind the Day 4 training is to equip the teachers with the proper techniques
of teaching listening, and speaking as well as the ways of motivating the
learners.
Contents of the Training: Motivation,
Teaching Listening, Teaching Speaking.
Training procedures in brief :
As per the pre-scheduled work plan,
the digital floor of the training of Day 4 opened at 10:15. With Manju Pathak
madam presenting the report for the previous day training at 10:27, the first
session of Day 4 training was formally begun. Ramchandra Kattel sir welcomed
all of the participants. Then, the Director of ETC, Chandra Prasad Luitel
started the first session at half-past ten. We got involved in quiz for a while
under the guidance of Kattel sir when Luitel sir was disconnected. Then,
Chandra Prasad sir dealt with motivational issues, the meaning of motivation,
wheel of self-motivation, etc. through a PowerPoint presentation.
After a short break, the second
session of the training began with our facilitator Raju Shrestha taking the
command. At first, the participants were asked to present their ideas based on
the assignment given to them earlier. Then, Raju sir facilitated us about what
listening is, drawing definitions from different sources. We had meaningful
discussions regarding listening and hearing, learning to listen and listening
to learn, listening skills, and format of teaching listening, techniques of
teaching listening as well as the interconnection between listening and
reading. Raju sir provided us with some useful websites for listening materials
and articles, such as www.elllo.org/ www.voanews.com / TESOL Quarterly.
We had another 10-minute break at 2:05. Dev Prasad Pandit from Chitwan was our facilitator for the third session of the day. After a brief introduction to himself, Dev Prasad sir started his session highlighting features of the new curriculum, level-wise competencies, and learning outcomes of grades 9 and 10 mentioned in it. After defining what listening skill is, he proceeded further and introduced to us the digital recording platform www.vocaroo.com and www.free4talk.com for international communication and language exchanges.
Facilitation techniques used:
There were several facilitation
techniques used by the trainer which included question and answer,
brainstorming, group discussions, and practical implementation of some of the
topics by trainees. The multitude of training methodologies was utilized to
make sure all the participants get the whole concepts and they practice what
they learn because only listening to the trainers can be forgotten, but what
the trainees do by themselves they will never forget.
Closing of the Day 4 Training:
After we filled up our attendance
form, Narayani Timalsina madam presented the review of all three sessions of
training. Finally, Ram Chandra Kattel sir concluded the program at 3:40.
Conclusion and Recommendation:
The training program was conducted
successfully and all the participants took an active part in all the three
sessions of the Day 4 training. We all had a wonderful time during the whole
sessions learning new ideas and techniques to be employed in the classroom and
beyond. We felt motivated and engaged in the activities except for a few
instances.
However, we were a little bit
de-motivated while doing the topic "Motivation" itself and during the
initial phase of the last session. The network disruptions of both facilitators
and participants at times, one-way presentation, and the repetition of the
topic done in the first phase of the training might be some of the reasons for
causing lethargy. Due to network problems, we had to skip some items of
speaking. We also had lengthy sessions compared to the schedule. There are some
suggestions from the participants' side to lengthen refreshment break.
Thank you!
